Who qualifies

Global Talent is for people recognised as a leader or a potential leader in academia and research, arts and culture, or digital technology. You must be at least 18. There are two ways in. If you have won one of the prizes on the official list, you apply for the visa straight away. Otherwise you first apply for an endorsement from the body the Home Office has approved for your field.

The contrast with the Skilled Worker visa is the point: you need no sponsor and no job offer. You can be employed, self-employed, start a company or change jobs without asking the Home Office. For founders from the tech world that is often a cleaner way in than the Innovator Founder visa.

Cost and process

The visa costs £766. With an endorsement you pay it in two parts: £561 with the endorsement application and £205 with the visa application. With an eligible prize you pay it all with the visa application. Your partner and children pay £766 each as well, and everyone pays the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 a year.

Once you are endorsed you have three months to apply for the visa. If the body withdraws its endorsement before then, you can no longer apply.

Length of stay and settlement

You can get up to five years at a time and extend as often as you like, by one to five years each time. Indefinite leave to remain is possible after 3 or 5 years, depending on your field and the way you qualified. Partners and children can settle after five years.

The earned settlement proposal would keep the three-year fast track for Global Talent. So far that is a proposal, not a rule. What is settled is that from 26 March 2027 settlement on this route requires English at B2. More on our pages on earned settlement and indefinite leave to remain.

When the talent brings assets too

People who move on Global Talent often have income from shareholdings, licences or a company back home. How the UK taxes that income has nothing to do with the visa. It turns on your residence and, for the first four years, on the FIG regime. That planning belongs before the move, not after.

Family and extensions

Your partner and children can come with you or join later. Each pays the full visa fee and the health surcharge. Their own settlement takes five years, even if you can settle after three. That matters for family planning: a child who arrives at fifteen can be settled in time for university, while a partner who joins later needs a full five years of their own.

You choose the length of each extension, from one to five years. If settlement is close, you can time the extension to match and avoid paying the surcharge for years you will not need.

Preparing for the endorsement

The endorsement is the real test. What works:

  • Pin down your field and the right endorsing body early: research, arts and culture, and digital technology each have their own criteria.
  • Gather evidence from outside: publications, awards, press coverage and letters of support, not just your own account of yourself.
  • Ask for letters from people who carry weight in your field and genuinely know your work.
  • Make your plans for the UK concrete: where you will work, with whom and on what.
  • Once endorsed, do not let the three months for the visa application slip away.

Global Talent for digital entrepreneurs

For founders and executives in digital technology, Global Talent is often a neater route than a work visa through their own company. You need no sponsor licence, no UK company with a trading record and no salary threshold. You can set up the company when it makes business sense, not because the visa demands it. The price is a demanding endorsement that has to prove your standing in the field.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a job offer?

No. Global Talent is not tied to an employer.

Can I start a company on Global Talent?

Yes. You may be self-employed and set up a business. For the company itself, our UK Company Setup is the simplest route.

How long does the endorsement take?

That depends on the endorsing body. Plan it as a separate step before the visa.

Do I need to prove my English?

GOV.UK sets no English requirement for the visa itself. For settlement, English at B2 applies from 26 March 2027.
