The banks for clients off the island

Barclays International runs the International Bank Account in dollars, sterling or euro and holds the deposits on the Isle of Man. You need to live in one of the more than 35 countries Barclays serves and bring at least £100,000 in savings or investments. There are no monthly fees unless your average drops below £100,000; then it is £40 a month. From £250,000 you get a dedicated relationship manager. Barclays does not publish which countries are on its list, so we clarify that before you apply.

Santander International has branches in Jersey and on the Isle of Man. Since August 2025 clients living outside the islands, the UK and Ireland pay £40 a month if their balance is below £75,000, and the bank closes accounts that are not funded. Santander takes enquiries only from the countries on its list; Sweden, France and Germany are on it. Check the list for your country of residence before you send anything.

Isle of Man Bank is a trading name of the Royal Bank of Scotland International, the same group as NatWest International. Conister Bank is a small island bank whose deposits fall under the island's scheme; it does not publish terms for clients from off the island.

The Isle of Man's deposit protection

The island's regulator puts it bluntly: compensation schemes in the UK, Ireland or anywhere else do not cover deposits with Isle of Man banks. The island has its own scheme. It protects £50,000 per person and bank, and alone among the three Crown Dependencies it also covers companies, trusts and partnerships, at £20,000 per entity and bank.

Residence, nationality and currency make no difference. Two limits are worth knowing: only clients of banks holding a Class 1(1) licence are covered, not Class 1(2) or 1(3). And debts to the same bank, a loan for instance, can be set off against the compensation. There is no fixed deadline for payment; the scheme aims to make at least an interim payment after 28 days. Funding from the banks and the government is capped at £200 million.

The regulator reviewed its limits in 2024 and decided to keep them. For charities on the island, cover is due to rise to £50,000 once the island's parliament approves it. The comparison with Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar and the FSCS is in deposit protection on the islands.

The Isle of Man and the CRS

The Isle of Man committed to the CRS early and signed the multilateral agreement in 2014. As one of the early adopters it first exchanged account data in September 2017. It had already signed a FATCA agreement with the United States on 13 December 2013. You declare your income where you are tax resident. More in the CRS and the islands.

An account, or a move?

Live on the Isle of Man and every island account and business account is open to you. What a move to the island means, from income tax to the cost of living, is in our Isle of Man island profile and the wider British islands section.

Who the Isle of Man suits

The Isle of Man suits you if you want an international account with a big British group and bring at least £100,000, or if a company with a genuine island link needs an account. For smaller sums without living on the island the fees rarely pay off; then Jersey, with its expat accounts, is often the better place.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are there Isle of Man accounts for small sums?

For clients from off the island we found no Isle of Man account with a low entry point confirmed on a bank's own page. Barclays International starts at £100,000, and Santander International charges a fee below £75,000.

Is my holding company protected on the Isle of Man?

Up to £20,000 per bank, if the bank holds a Class 1(1) licence. In Jersey and Guernsey companies are not covered at all.

Does the FSCS apply on the Isle of Man?

No. The island's regulator states expressly that UK and other schemes do not cover deposits on the Isle of Man.

Will Barclays International accept me where I live?

Barclays serves more than 35 countries but does not publish the list. Ask before you gather documents, or let us check it for you.
