The tax: low for everyone, capped for a few

The Isle of Man tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. For 2026/27: 10 per cent on the first £6,500 of taxable income, 21 per cent above that. The personal allowance rises to £17,000, or £34,000 for married couples assessed jointly. As in the UK, it shrinks by £1 for every £2 of income above £100,000 and is gone at £134,000.

High earners can elect a tax cap for five or ten years. Since 6 April 2026 the cap for new elections is £220,000, or £440,000 for married couples. Existing elections keep the amount of their first year. In practice the cap only pays from an income of just over £1 million; below that, ordinary tax costs you less.

The island charges no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax and no stamp duty on buying property. According to Locate Isle of Man, the government's relocation agency, there are no restrictions on foreigners buying property.

Ordinary tax or the cap?

Simplified sum for a single person in 2026/27, before social security. From £134,000 of income the allowance is gone.

The visa: the real hurdle

The Isle of Man has its own immigration rules. If you are not from the UK or Ireland and want to live and work on the island, you need an Isle of Man visa. Among the visas the government lists, there is no residence-by-investment programme of the kind Jersey or some Caribbean islands run.

For employees the standard route is the Worker Migrant visa. It needs a confirmed job with an employer on the island, runs for up to three years and one month at first and can be extended by three years. Groups can send staff on the intra-company transfer visa.

Founders have the Business Migrant route under Appendix X of the immigration rules. The Department for Enterprise assesses the plan and issues a letter of endorsement; the assessment costs £1,000. The start-up category gives two years and four months with no path to settlement; in the innovator category you must invest at least £50,000 in the business. How the UK routes the island takes its cue from are built is shown in our section on visas and residence.

Companies on the island

Companies on the Isle of Man pay 0 per cent as a rule. The exceptions: banking, and retail above a small-business threshold of £500,000, at 10 per cent; income from island property and oil extraction at 20 per cent. Since 2025 large international groups also face the global minimum tax, with a domestic top-up of 15 per cent.

A Manx company run from your home country may well be taxed as a company of that country, because many systems tax a company where it is actually managed, and your home country's rules on low-taxed foreign companies may add to that. An island company makes sense when you live on the island yourself and run the business from there. How the banks see it is in our article on banking on the Isle of Man.

The EU list and your home country

The Isle of Man is not on the EU list of non-cooperative jurisdictions, neither in Annex I nor in Annex II of the version of 9 October 2026. Account data flows under the Common Reporting Standard to the country where you are tax resident.

If you move, the open questions are your home country's. It may charge exit tax on shareholdings, keep you liable for gifts and estates for some years, or keep taxing income from home for longer when you move somewhere with markedly lower tax, which the island's rates usually are. More on the list itself on our page about the EU list of tax havens.

Who the Isle of Man suits

People who want to work on the island or build a real business there, families who do not want to buy a seven-figure house just to be allowed to live somewhere, and top earners who plan long term with the cap. It suits retirees without a job or company less well: without a British or Irish passport there is usually no immigration route that fits them.

From twenty years in the islands: the Isle of Man is the most accessible of the three Crown Dependencies, its adviser market included. It is still not cheap, and if you do not sort out the visa and the home-country side first, you pay twice.

FAQ

Questions about the Isle of Man

Is there inheritance tax on the Isle of Man?

No. The island charges no inheritance tax, no capital gains tax and no stamp duty on property purchases. Your home country may still have a say for some years after you leave.

Can I move to the Isle of Man without working there?

That is hard. The island's visas assume a job or a business, and there is no pure residence programme for people living on their capital.

Is the tax cap worth it?

Only above an income of roughly £1 million. Below that, ordinary tax at 10 and 21 per cent comes to less than £220,000.
