Deposit insurance: better than its reputation

The Virgin Islands Deposit Insurance Corporation covers deposits up to US$100,000 per depositor, per member bank. Nationality and residence play no part, and unlike in Jersey and Guernsey, companies are covered too. Every bank holding a BVI deposit-taking licence is a member. Securities, funds, insurance, crypto assets and loans are not insured.

That deposit insurance is no academic matter is shown by Bank of Asia (BVI): provisional liquidators were appointed on 28 May 2025. The comparison with the other islands is in deposit protection on the islands.

Which banks take clients from outside

VP Bank (BVI) is a private bank. Its minimum for clients outside the BVI is $100,000, and $50,000 for residents. It offers no current accounts and no cards. The contact form on the same page names higher minimums for some countries of residence (for clients resident in Germany, for example, CHF 250,000), so check which minimum the bank applies to your country before you plan.

CIBC Caribbean in the BVI also takes non-residents, with valid ID, proof of address and references. Minimum deposits on its savings accounts range from $100 to $2,000. Whether BVI banks accept companies that are not managed in the islands is something they do not publish; more on that in company accounts on the islands.

The CRS and the EU list

The BVI were early adopters of the CRS: banks' first return to the tax authority was due by 31 May 2017, with exchange with the first group of countries promised by September 2017. The BVI signed a FATCA agreement with the United States on 30 June 2014. Your account is reported to your country of residence, and you declare the income there. More in the CRS and the islands.

On the EU list of October 2026 the BVI sit in Annex II, among the jurisdictions with ongoing commitments, not on the blacklist in Annex I. The commitment: a supplementary Global Forum review by 15 February 2027 to improve its rating on exchange of information on request. What a listing means in practice depends on your home country, which may apply its own rules to structures in listed territories; for a company or trust, that is a question for the UK Tax Consult before you set anything up.

Who a BVI account suits

A BVI account suits you if you want to place a six-figure dollar sum in private banking, if you live in the islands or if your company is managed there. For a small banking centre the deposit insurance is sound, and it covers companies too.

For everyday banking from Europe it is a detour. The private bank offers neither a current account nor a card, the retail bank is built for the region, and for sterling and euros there are places closer to home. If you need an account for a BVI company, settle the structure first, because the bank follows the structure. Our BVI island guide covers the rest of the picture.

How to check a BVI bank

Every bank with a BVI deposit-taking licence is automatically a member of the deposit insurance scheme. That is a good first filter: an institution that takes deposits without a BVI banking licence is not covered. The licence that counts is the one under the Banks and Trust Companies Act 1990.

The Bank of Asia case shows why the check is worth it. Its depositors depend on the liquidation and the deposit insurance. So spread larger sums across several member banks in the BVI as well, and treat $100,000 per bank as the ceiling of your protection.
